Denver animal shelter dropping the name ‘dumb’ after 115 years

There are a lot of words that have been “cancelled” in the English language, but the word “dumb” isn’t on that list, is it?

The Denver Dumb Friends League is changing its name and will now become Humane Colorado.

When the organization was founded 115 years ago, “dumb” was more commonly used to refer to beings that don’t speak, like dogs and cats. The organization said it’s heard plenty of complaints and questions about the name over the years, so they’ve decided to change to a name that, “reflects who they are today and the impact they make as leaders in animal welfare both in Colorado and nationally.”

In addition to the new name, Humane Colorado also has a new logo as well as a new tagline, “Leading with Compassion.”
