Colorado Kohl’s Thieves Ask for Lesser Charges Because the Items They Stole Were On Sale

Dec 14, 2023, 3:36 PM

If you steal an item and get caught are you on the hook for the amount the item costed originally or the discounted price if the item is on sale? That question became a reality in Colorado recently…

Two men in Colorado argued that their theft at a local Kohl’s should have been considered a misdemeanor rather than a felony because, with coupons, they stole less than $2,000 worth of merchandise.

In Colorado, theft under $2,000 is a misdemeanor offense while theft between $2,000 and $5,000 is a Class 6 felony. According to the DA’s office, the value of the items stolen was $2,094.98.

The jury convicted the two men of felony theft.

I wonder if they tried to use Kohl’s Cash as bail money…
