Avalanche officially make decision on HC Jared Bednar’s future

After the Colorado Avalanche had a disappointing playoff series by getting swept by the Vegas Knights, the Avs’ front office had a big decision to make.

Colorado’s front office had to decide if they wanted to keep head coach Jared Bednar.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Bednar will remain the head coach of the Avalanche.

Bednar is entering the final year of his contract and once again, the Avalanche will go into the season as a Stanley Cup or bust team.

The Avalanche hired Bednar in 2016 after former head coach Patrick Roy stepped down because he wasn’t having enough input with personnel decisions.

In his first season as head coach, Bednar didn’t have a full offseason to get his team ready, and they finished the season with an NHL-worst 48 points.

The following season, Bednar’s team nearly doubled their season point total by finishing with 95 points and making the playoffs.

Bednar has coached the Avalanche for 10 years now and has made the playoffs for nine straight seasons.

In 2021-22, Bednar led the Avalanche to 119 points making the Avalanche one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. After making a quick playoff run, the Avs found themselves in the Stanley Cup Final taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Bay had been Stanley Cup champions in back-to-back years prior to taking on the Avs.

Colorado would end the potential dynasty of the Lightning by not letting them win three championships in a row.

Bednar’s group beat the Lightning in six games and led the Avs to their third Stanley Cup victory in franchise history.

Since winning the cup, the Avs have yet to get back to the finals and Bednar might get one final chance this upcoming season.
