AI replaces 40% of the work staff at Block

Mar 2, 2026, 9:02 AM

AI is replacing or eliminating 4,000 jobs at Block, including 60+ Colorado-based employees, the company behind online payment platforms such as Square and Cash App.

It’s the beginning of the end. More companies will do the same.

Block is doing it first and being honest about it as they cut their staff by 40%.  AI can do more of that work better than the people that are working there.

Time to find a career that AI can not copy.  What is that? Where is AI not reaching these days? It is everywhere and getting smarter every day.

It’s doomsday and reality all rolled into one.

“The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company,” Jack Dorsey said in a letter to shareholders. “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better,” he said.

“For years, we have debated whether AI would dent jobs at the margin. Now we have a public case study in which the CEO explicitly says that intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary.

“Other large employers have announced tens of thousands of cuts in recent months. Some have downplayed the AI link. Block did not,” he said.

Replaced by Intelligent Tools…sounds about right.
