Do you think this AI trend is a fad? Well, here’s a big clue right across the Colorado border that it’s not going anywhere!
A massive artificial intelligence data center planned for Cheyenne, and it will use more electricity than every home in the state combined, according to the city’s mayor.
The facility is a joint project between energy companies Tallgrass and Crusoe and will start with 1.8 gigawatts of power, which is five times more electricity than all Wyoming homes use together. If the project reaches its full planned size of 10 gigawatts, it would use double the amount of electricity the entire state currently makes each year.
Wyoming is already one of the nation’s biggest energy suppliers, producing 12 times more total energy than it uses, mostly from fossil fuels. However, this AI project pushes the state into new territory for electricity demand. The mayor called it a “game changer” for the area. The massive power needs show how much electricity AI systems require to operate, creating challenges for the power grid.
The identity of which company will actually use the data center remains unknown.
