Colorado has a new pro football team, and it’s charging into Colorado Springs. On Sunday, the United Football League revealed the name of the city’s new spring football team: the Colorado Stampede. The logo is a bison head with a red “C” stamped on its forehead and snowcapped mountains across the top of its head. Hundreds of fans came out to Weidner Field to see the reveal, and merchandise went fast. Fans waited in a long line for shirts, hats and hoodies.
The team’s four colors each represent a piece of Colorado. Bison Brown is for the plains bison. Gold Rush honors the state’s mining history. Canyon Red is a nod to the red rocks of Garden of the Gods, and Summit White is for the mountain peaks. “Bison Brown brings the power. Gold Rush captures the speed. Summit White reaches for the top,” the league said. The palette is earthy and a little retro, like a wood-paneled den from 1975, and plenty of fans love it. “Love the name, love the logo,” one fan told The Gazette. “It’s nice and neutral. It’s gonna fit in well with the city.”
The Stampede already has a coach: Rick Neuheisel, who used to coach the CU Buffs. The UFL is moving him and his Dallas Renegades roster to Colorado Springs for the league’s fourth season. Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade thinks the city is ready. “It is the right market. It is the right city, the right fan base,” he said. “We’ve proven it with the Switchbacks, and we’re going to do it again with the Stampede.”
The Stampede will play five home games at Weidner Field in downtown Colorado Springs starting next spring. Season tickets for all five games start at $75.
