The Blue Angels are coming back to Colorado this weekend. You’ll need to drive over the mountains to see them, but with the aspens changing along I-70 right now, that’s not a bad trip.
The Navy’s flight demonstration team headlines the Grand Junction Air Show this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4, at Grand Junction Regional Airport. It’s their only Colorado stop this year, and the Western Slope is getting six blue-and-gold F/A-18 Super Hornets flying close enough together that you’ll wonder how they don’t trade paint. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. both days and close at 5 p.m. The rest of the flying acts start in the late morning, and the Blue Angels have typically closed out the day in the afternoon. An Air Force F-16 demo is also expected.
Before you go, know this: there’s no public parking at the airport. Everyone has to park in designated lots and take the free shuttles. You can reserve a parking spot ahead of time through the Grand Junction Sports Commission. Also, don’t expect Fat Albert, the C-130 that usually opens Blue Angels shows. Organizers say it won’t be there this year.
Tickets are still on sale online until Friday, Oct. 2, and prices go up at the gate. Online, general admission is $30 for adults, $10 for kids 5 to 12 and $15 for veterans. Reserved seats along the flight line are $45 for adults and $25 for kids, with seats first-come, first-served inside that section. At the gate, adult GA goes up to $40 and adult reserved to $55. VIP is sold out. All sales are final, and there are no rain dates, so check the forecast.
From Denver, Grand Junction is roughly a four-hour drive on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, which is one of the prettiest drives in the state in early October. Pack sunscreen, earplugs for the kids and a camera. When six jets pass over you at 400 mph, you’ll want proof.
