Colorado’s most famous fictional town just got a new name — ‘South Park’ is now ‘South America’

For 29 years, the fictional Colorado town of South Park has been the setting for one of the most iconic animated shows in television history. The four foul-mouthed kids, the snow-capped mountains, the absurdity, all of it unmistakably Colorado. Well, the show is still set in Colorado, but the name is changing. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced today that Season 29 of “South Park” will officially be rebranded as “South America.”
The tongue-in-cheek rebrand, the show’s first name change in its nearly three-decade run, is obviously a joke, and a very on-brand one for Parker and Stone, who have built their careers on satirizing absolutely everything. The duo said they were “inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google” in making the change, and the new title card swaps “Park” for “America” in the show’s iconic logo. The season premieres Sept. 16 on Comedy Central, fresh off an Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program.
For Colorado, “South Park” has always been a point of pride, even when the show is roasting us. Parker grew up in Conifer, just southwest of Denver, and Stone is from Littleton. The show is named after the real South Park basin in Park County, Colorado, and while the fictional version has been home to alien invasions, celebrity feuds and a talking towel, it’s also put a tiny corner of the Colorado Rockies on the global pop culture map in a way nothing else ever has. The duo doubled down on their Colorado roots in recent years by purchasing and renovating the actual restaurant of Casa Bonita in Lakewood, turning the beloved (and wonderfully absurd) Denver-area restaurant into a real-life destination that’s become one of the hardest reservations in the state.
Season 29 of “South America” — we’re still getting used to saying that — premieres Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central and will be available to stream the following day. Whatever Parker and Stone have planned, Colorado will be watching.
