With the push to remove many artificial dyes and ingredients from America’s diets, Mars is joining by releasing an artificial dye-free version of their candies, which will not include the blue and brown M&M’s.
The reason being? The cost.
While they were able to recreate their other colors using natural ingredients such as red, yellow, orange and green, they found that recreating the other colors were too costly, such as blue which relied on spirulina which is an algae-based cyanobacteria and often added to smoothies, juices and other food for its health benefits.
Blue was added to the M&M’s line-up back in 1995 when the replaced the tan M&M’s. Brown has been a part of the M&M’s line up since 1941 when M&M’s were first released along with red, yellow, violet and green.
