Colorado-born Blue Moon turning its beer literally blue next weekend — and you can get it in Denver

May 26, 2026, 4:12 PM

The beer that was born in Denver inside a baseball stadium at 20th and Blake is about to do something it has never done in three decades: actually turn blue.

Blue Moon Brewing Company announced this week that it will serve a limited-time, blue-hued version of its Belgian White Wheat Ale at participating bars across the country from May 29–31, timed to the blue moon that peaks the night of May 31. The promotion — which the company is framing as a “formal apology” on behalf of the real moon for never actually being blue — will be available in more than 30 U.S. markets, including Denver and Golden, where the brand’s Colorado roots run deepest.

“We can’t do much about the color of the moon in the sky, but we can do something about the one in your glass,” said Elizabeth Hitch, vice president of marketing for above premium beer at Molson Coors Beverage Company. “So for one weekend, we’re making Blue Moon, well … actually blue.”

Colorado bars confirmed on the list so far include ACE HI in Golden, Buffalo Rose in Golden and In the Zone in Denver, all pouring on Saturday, May 30. Blue Moon’s website has a locator tool for additional participating locations. The company described the blue pour as “think green beer, but rarer, bolder and brighter,” with the signature Valencia orange garnish still intact. The beer will be available while supplies last.

The stunt carries extra weight in Colorado, where Blue Moon’s story began. Founder and brewmaster Keith Villa, who holds a Ph.D. in brewing from the University of Brussels, created the beer in 1995 at the Sandlot Brewery inside Coors Field — the corner of 22nd and Blake — as an operating unit of what was then the Coors Brewing Company. Originally called Bellyslide Wit and served alongside a roster that included Slugger Stout and Rightfield Red, the Belgian-style wheat ale garnished with an orange slice caught on with Rockies fans and eventually grew into the largest craft-style beer brand in the country. Blue Moon is still brewed at its birthplace inside Coors Field and at the Molson Coors brewery in Golden.
