Bo Nix undergoes second ankle procedure, but Broncos say he’ll be ready for training camp

Apr 29, 2026, 10:13 AM

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had a follow-up cleanup procedure on his right ankle last week — and while that’s not exactly the offseason news Broncos Country was hoping to hear, it may not be as alarming as it sounds. Nix originally fractured his right ankle during Denver’s thrilling 33-30 overtime playoff win over the Buffalo Bills back in January, then underwent surgery to repair it shortly after. The cleanup procedure came during a scheduled post-operative visit with Dr. Norman Waldrop III in Birmingham, Ala. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called the procedure “anticipated,” noting that a follow-up cleanup after a fractured ankle is “not rare or unexpected.”

The more immediate concern is what this means for Nix’s spring workload. While the Broncos had previously said Nix was on track to fully participate in OTAs — which are set to kick off in early June — his status for those sessions is now in doubt. Rapoport said don’t be surprised if Denver takes it very easy with him this spring. The good news? Nix is still firmly on track to be ready for the start of training camp in July. “Nix continues to make strong progress in his recovery and remains firmly on track to be ready for the start of training camp,” Rapoport said.

For Broncos fans, the situation is worth watching but not quite time to hit the panic button — yet. The team is expected to be conservative with their franchise QB this spring, and there’s even talk of Denver possibly adding a fourth quarterback as a camp arm to help cover the void during OTAs. Nix, who threw for 3,931 yards with 25 touchdowns in his second season, was the heartbeat of a Broncos team that made back-to-back playoff appearances. The Mile High faithful will just have to be a little patient before seeing No. 10 back under center.
