Only in Colorado: we go from fire danger to snow in the same week

Apr 14, 2026, 11:20 AM

If you’ve lived in Colorado long enough, you know the weather doesn’t exactly follow the rules. This week is a perfect example. Red flag warnings have been active across much of the state, with gusty winds up to 45 mph in some parts and critically dry conditions making fire danger a very real concern through at least Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will stay warm and dry — keeping that fire danger in play — but hold on, because things are about to flip.

That’s right — by Friday afternoon, forecasters are calling for chances of showers and, yes, snow. Because of course they are. This is Colorado, where you can go from worrying about wildfires to dusting off your snow brush in the span of a few days. There’s even a chance the wintry mix could linger into the weekend, though forecasters are still ironing out those details.

So consider this your friendly reminder to not put those layers away just yet. Stay weather-aware this week — keep an eye on fire conditions through midweek, and don’t be shocked if you wake up Friday or Saturday to a little white stuff on the ground. Classic Colorado, doing Colorado things.
