Missing a sword? A Colorado sheriff’s office has one in its lost and found

Apr 13, 2026, 3:50 PM

I’m sure weird things end up in lost & founds all time, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a real sword being in one… And it happened right here in Colorado!

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office has a question for the residents of western Colorado: Are you missing an 18-inch sword?

A county resident brought the medieval-themed weapon into the sheriff’s office this week after finding it lying in their driveway, the office said Sunday. No explanation was offered for how it got there.

Evidence technicians have since booked the sword into the Mesa County “Lost Property” section of the evidence room, where it now sits alongside the more typical wallets, phones and car keys that make up a sheriff’s office lost and found.

The timing was not lost on the department. The sword arrived during Evidence Technicians Week, an annual observance highlighting the work of the technicians who process and catalog evidence from crime scenes.

The sheriff’s office shared a video of the sword on social media Sunday, drawing amused reactions from residents and prompting the obvious follow-up question: Who leaves a sword in someone’s driveway?

So far, no one has come forward to claim it.

Anyone who believes the sword belongs to them is encouraged to contact the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
