Fizz’s Top 5 Colorado Weekend Getaways
Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to explore the stunning mountain towns just a few hours from the Front Range. Here are five weekend escapes that deliver on scenery, adventure, and that signature Colorado charm.
1. OURAY
Tucked into a box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, Ouray punches well above its weight. Visitors can soak in natural hot springs, hike to Box Canyon Falls, or drive the legendary Million Dollar Highway for views that rival the Alps.
2. CRESTED BUTTE
This former mining town has evolved into a laid-back haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Known as “the last great Colorado ski town,” Crested Butte shines brightest in summer with its walkable, colorful downtown, scenic chairlift rides, and the spectacular drive up Kebler Pass at golden hour.
3. TELLURIDE
Surrounded on three sides by towering peaks, Telluride might be Colorado’s most visually stunning mountain town. Victorian buildings line Main Street, and the ski area is reachable on foot—no shuttle required. Summer brings world-class hiking, mountain biking, and a packed festival calendar.
4. DURANGO
Durango is the larger, livelier pick for travelers wanting variety. Kayaking and rafting on the Animas River run right through town, the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers jaw-dropping scenery, and the farmer’s market is a weekend highlight.
5. LEADVILLE
At 10,119 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the United States. Its single main street brims with historic character, indie coffee shops, and artistic flair. Nearby Twin Lakes and the drive over Independence Pass to the Maroon Bells make Leadville an ideal base for 14er-chasers and casual explorers alike.
