Normally sports teams that are hated by all other team’s fans fall into one of two categories… They have dirty players or they’re always winning. The Colorado Avalanche must be the latter.
A survey conducted by CanadaSportsBetting revealed that the Avalanche are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the most-hated NHL team in the United States.
The study analyzed Google search behavior across all 50 U.S. states and every Canadian province and territory, using Google Keyword Planner to capture average monthly search volume for all 32 NHL teams (December 2021 – November 2025).
- The team with the highest search volume in each region was identified as that region’s most followed NHL team
- That team was matched to its primary historical rival using an internal rivalry dataset
- The rival was labeled the region’s “most hated” team — meaning the team fans are most likely rooting against, based on this pairing
The study even goes as far as showing the states that hate the Avs the most:
- Alaska
- Texas
- Louisiana
- Oklahoma
- Mississippi
- Arkansas
- Iowa
- North Dakota
- South Dakota
- Minnesota
- Wisconsin
