‘Diverging diamond interchange’ opens near Denver International Airport

No offense here, but some of y’all are still learning how to use a roundabout, and now a new traffic intersection is coming to Denver for us all to try and figure out…

Denver International Airport has opened a new “diverging diamond interchange” on Jackson Gap Street at Peña Boulevard. For those driving to and from shuttle lots and rental car facilities, the diverging diamond interchange shifts the direction of traffic on Jackson Gap Street.

The new design aims to create a consistent flow of traffic with increased capacity and enhanced safety. The design reduces risk to drivers by eliminating left turns across oncoming traffic.

Construction of the interchange began in April 2024 at a cost of nearly $12 million.

Although it may sound and even look confusing at first, it really is a simple concept. As drivers approach the interchange, the two directions of traffic on the road temporarily switch sides of the road via crossovers controlled by traffic signals. Signs, signals and pavement markings are used to make the unique design more intuitive for drivers.
