WNBA announces expansion to three cities – is Denver one of them?

With all the hype around the new National Women’s Soccer League team that is coming to Denver, you’d think the WNBA would take notice and want a part of that action…

The WNBA announced on Monday that the league will have 18 teams in operation by 2030, meaning they’re expanding by three teams in the coming years.

Sadly, Denver sports fans looking to have a WNBA team will have to wait even longer than that, as the bid put in by an investment group led by the Dimond family was not a winner, and the city will not be getting a team in the next five years minimum.

Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia were the three cities with the winning bids, with teams in those cities set to kick off play in 2028, 2029 and 2030, respectively.

Although there is no word on why Denver wasn’t chosen, the league says that their emphasis is “around arena, practice facility, player experience, committed long-term ownership, city demographics, psychographics, Fortune 500 companies based [in the potential cities].”
