Did hundreds of king cobras really spill an a Wyoming highway?

Aug 1, 2024, 4:34 PM | Updated: 7:09 pm

My social media feed has felt like something straight out of a horror movie the last couple days as people keep sharing a story of hundreds of deadly king cobra snakes spilling out of a truck on a highway in Casper, Wyoming… But I am happy to say it’s not true!

On Tuesday (July 30), a Facebook post began going viral about a semi-truck carrying hundreds of king cobras overturning on I-25, releasing the venomous snakes about four hours away from Denver in Casper.

Casper Planet, a self described satire Facebook page, posted on Tuesday, “that a semi-truck carrying king cobras from a scientific research lab overturned on Interstate 25 near Casper early this morning, releasing hundreds of the venomous snakes onto the highway”. For those unfamiliar with satire, it’s the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

The original post on Facebook has over 26-thousand shares, and even prompted almost two dozen calls to the Wyoming Department of Transportation from concerned folks. Some people even telling them that they planned on changing their travel routes due to that portion of I-25 being supposedly closed.

But again one more time for the people in the back, it’s not true, it was posted by a page that specializes in fake stories, and you really shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet!
