$20 and $30 Flights Out of Denver for Spring Break Aren’t as Cheap as They Seem

Mar 9, 2023, 5:17 PM

I can’t go on the internet over the last week or so without being bombarded by ads from airlines offering super cheap flights for Spring Break out of Denver. Some of the flights are advertised as low as $20 or $30 one way… But not so fast!

Reading the fine print will reveal these deals aren’t as good as they seem.

“It’s a fee structure. It’s a way to make money there,” consumer expert Laura Daily told Denver7. “They can sell you a $30 ticket, but on average, if you fly Frontier, Spirit, you’re going to pay maybe $125 to $150 each way in fees.”

On top of baggage, there are fees for things I’d never even heard of. For instance, if you fly Frontier, printing boarding passes and self-tagging your bag will cost you $25. If you accidentally enter your name wrong when you purchase your ticket, Frontier will charge you $75 to fix it. Cancelling your flight, no matter how soon after booking, will cost you $99. Changing your flight plans will cost you nearly $50 if it’s less than two months before your trip.
