People who don’t live in Colorado always wonder what the heck a King Soopers is, and conversely a lot of people from Colorado wonder what a Piggly Wiggly is… They’re the same thing, grocery stores, and soon we may have the latter in Colorado.
Albertsons Companies, which owns 103 Safeway stores in the state of Colorado, released a list of 91 stores across the state it plans to sell if a planned merger between the company and Kroger is approved.
Of these, two are Albertsons-branded stores and 89 are Safeway-branded stores. With 103 Safeway stores in the state, that means that all but 14 Safeway stores in the state would be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire-based company that owns Piggly Wiggly.
So will these stores be rebranded as Piggly Wiggly’s? Denver7 spoke with a C&S Wholesale Grocers representative regarding potential re-branding across Colorado, who said, “the agreement is set to close in early 2024, subject to regulatory clearance and customary closing conditions. At this time, no more information will be available.”
