June 29, 2008The Young Philanthropists Foundation (YPF) was born out of one of our nation's darkest days.  Founder Alexis Boian (a Colorado native) watched, first-hand, as the events of September 11th, 2001, unfolded before her eyes and the eyes of the world.  And after spearheading an effort to create a memorial quilt, Alexis realized a need to pass on to children our responsibility to our community.  And not only that, but the confdence that each individual has a signficant contribution to make to the betterment of our society.  The first project of the YPF was the Penny Harvest.  Alexis joined host Simone Seikaly to discuss the Harvest, and plans for the future.

June 22, 2008:  If you were to ask someone what they know about Autism Spectrum Disorder, it's likely they'll be able to tell you how many children are born each year with forms of autism, and how educators and parents are dealing with the problem of children with autism.  But what about the adults that are living with autism?  What do we know about them?  My guest this week was Gregg Wheelen with Stomp Out the Silence of Autism and Disabilities (SOS-AD).  This organization is behind the creation of a first-of-its-kind program in Colorado, that being a care facility for adults who are living with autism.  We spoke about the creation of the Hawkeye Ranch in Douglas County, and about an upcoming fundraiser (on the 4th of July, at Bandimere Speedway).

June 8, 2008:  For people in the "news business" stories of tragedy, like that of the tornado that hit Weld County, come and then they go.  It's just not the same story for the people living with the remnants, and on that topic Pastor Dave Hardy of the Windsor Community Church spoke with us, with an update on the Windsor rebuilding.  Next, James Mejia, the CEO of the Denver Preschool Program, spoke with us about how this tax-sponsored initiative is growing in participants by leaps and bounds, and how parents can get involved if they  haven't done so already.  The good people at the Mount Saint Vincent Home are celebrating 125 years of helping Colorado children, most recently, children requiring homes as well as psychological services .  COO Bill Roth is our guest.  Finally, you already know what you're doing to ease the pressures placed upon us by rising gas prices.  But what is your employer doing?  Meghan McNeely, with Denver's Robert Half International Staffing, makes suggestions for employers who want to keep good employees in these difficult financial times.

June 1, 2008:  KYGO's public affairs programming has expanded, allowing us to provide a larger platform for not-for-profit organizations, government officials, and other spokespeople to discuss issues of concern to the various communities of Colorado.  Simone's first guest this week was Karen Marino, with Picking up the Pieces, a local organization dedicated to helping people who've been displaced by natural disasters.  They pick up, where others leave off.  In Part Two, Simone speaks with Dr. Michelle Hannah, an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver, about a call from leading child welfare organizations for an overhaul of federal laws dealing with transracial adoption.  In part three, Simone spoke with Todd Davis, the CEO of LifeLock, about the theft of his identity, and then with Colorado Attorney General John Suthers who offered suggestions about how to prevent identity theft from happening to you.

May 11, 2008:  You know it's spring when daylight savings time starts settling in, and when two-wheelers show up in abundance on Colorado roadways.  Yes, bicyclists, but the ones with the motorized wheels are the topic of the show this week.  Simone will speak with a representative of ABATE of Colorado, about motorcycle safety and ways other drivers can stay most alert to those who share the road but not as much of the surrounding metal.  Join us!

May 4, 2008:  Have you received your economic stimulus rebate check?  This week, the U.S. government announced that the checks would be going out early, and if you had a refund coming from your 2007 taxes, and signed up for direct deposit, you'll be among the first to receive the checks.  Now, the money's supposed to help the American economy "bounce back" out of what some are calling a recession.  But will it help?  What if you want to save the money, or, pay down your debt, will that help the economy too?  Host Simone Seikaly asked Steve Staneck, the managing editor of Budget and Tax News, and a research fellow with the Heartland Institute.

April 27, 2008
"Helicopter parenting" is the topic of Hara Murano's "A Nation of Wimps,  the High Cost of Invasive Parenting."  Murano was in Denver to speak before the East Angel Alliance, and before that she spoke by phone with Simone Seikaly about how modern parents have moved into this "hovering" form of parenting, how desctructive it can be, how to recognize it, and how to change it.  And she says it must be changed, if we want our children to grow up and be able to handle their own problems.
